Painting from the Training School

Recently, Youth Visuals Coordinator Nick Carter facilitated a painting workshop at the Rhode Island Training School, the state’s juvenile detention center. Students painted portraits of fallen friends, favorite artists, cosmic abstractions, and emotive appeals for their release. Some of the most talented young artists live out of sight, behind bars. AS220 Youth works to connect with all RITS residents following their release.

Since December, we have been celebrating our 20 year partnership with Rhode Island Training School. AS220 Youth teaching artists have been working with youth behind bars since 1998. Our hallway gallery has been showcasing a small selection of the work that has been made there over the years.
