The most recent Youth Gallery exhibition showcases the paintings and music of D-REX aka D-Rizze aka Douglas Mulvey. The art is based on strength and achievements based on the outside world. From looking at D-REX’s art, he is inspired by the true life of a gangsta. The life of a true gangsta is not just made up of actions and problems – it is your past and what you have been through. In D-REX’s showcase you will find art from past years, recent work, and hints for his future work.
On April 27 the Laotian Community Center (LCC) will celebrate the Lao New year by holding a two day event at the Laotian temple (Watlao Buddhovath) in Smithfield, RI. I, Jen Leo, had taken pictures at Watlao about a month ago, so that I could catch the scenery before the temple was full of other Laotians from Southern New England. While there, I had taken pictures of the Statues. One statue is of Buddha, one is of three headed goddess and one is of a female Lao dancer. I like it there because it is quite and more peaceful than in the city. I am excited to print these photos because it is a chance for me to present my Laotian culture to my friends who are Cambodian and Spanish. I’m looking forward to both New Years and developing these photos because I personally want to know more about my Lao culture but, I also want others to know about the Laotian culture as well. -Jen Laotian Community Center Photos by Jen Leo

Tina Cane, the founder of Writers-in-the-Schools, RI, approached AS220 Youth about collaborating on a series of broadsides for poetry written by her students at Central Falls High School. Caitlin Cali and youth from our Visuals program jumped on the project and soon created paintings and drawings in response to the poetry. Graphic designer Jackie Frole developed a visual theme for the broadsides, and translator Cecilia Pirotto put the verses into Spanish. We were able to get the broadsides printed and produced with the support of the Providence Athenaeum. On May 7th, we got together with the Central Falls High School students for a broadsides celebration at the Athenaeum. During the event AS220 youth talked about the design process, and the CF poets read their work. The Athenaeum provided an awesome lunch from El Rancho Grande and also gave all the youth memberships to the Library. The CF poets seemed to like the art work we created, so we were happy about that! Those guys know how to through a party! The best thing is that this “party” was so far from average. No LQ, No top 40 garbage talkin bout the same ol’ crap and no dudes mean muggin’, ice grillin’ or being shady in the corner..Nope, not this party.. This party was straight HIP HOP, feel good tunes, live break cyphers, pop battles, beat boxing, graffitti, activities for the kids, real MC’s, and get this… A REAL DJ with these things called,,um what are they called again?? oh yeah, TURNTABLES!!! real turntables! (sorry laptop dj’s but Donnie Battle is for real)..There was so much life, positivity and respect in the building. This was an all-out AMAZING time. Shouts to B Boy FaCce Maldonado, Saulo, Donnie Battle, New Urban Arts and everyone else who helped make this possible and for keeping TRUE HIP HOP CULTURE ALIVE!!
