Adoption RI Visit: Yay For Saturday Workshops!
An awesome group of young folks from Adoption RI came to the studio for a Saturday afternoon screenprinting workshop this past weekend. They toured the studio, learned about what we do here, and then had some really yummy lunch from FOO(D). They all seemed impressed with the vibe in the studio and with all the excellent art and music that is made here.
After everyone had a chance to settle in and get some food in their stomachs, we moved into the visuals room and began using watercolors and markers to churn out colorful patterned backgrounds to use as the first layer in a multi-layered poster project.
Soon the hallway was filled with bright paintings laid out to dry. After a ten minute break, everyone came back into the visuals room with their painted backgrounds and began screenprinting pre-selected patterns that were inspired by cellular architecture. The bold screenprinted patterns looked awesome printed on top of the translucent watercolor designs.
As a finishing touch, the group brainstormed a list of I WILL statements such as “I WILL KEEP ON KEEPING ON”, “I WILL BRUSH MY TEETH” and “I WILL DREAM”. People then had the option of painting the statements as a third and final layer on top of the organic patterns.
In a few hours the group had generated a big stack of colorful posters with powerful and humorous statements scrawled across them. My favorite part of the afternoon was getting to make a bunch of art with all those lovely new people.
