Dougie Remembered: Reflecting on Our Beloved Friend

Today, we remember Douglas Cooper, a dear old friend who was killed over the weekend. Dougie participated in many different AS220 classes and worked in our Apprentice program in 2013.
Dougie was a quiet and respectful person, who had to bear a lot of pain throughout his short life. His lyrics speak to the impossible circumstances that children face when they’re living in extreme poverty.

Dougie was mature, with strong leadership skills. Anjel described him as a “tone-setter”…. if another student was acting silly or disrespectful in class, Dougie would just ask, “what are you doing, kid?” Trust that class was good from that point forward!
In the fall of 2013, Dougie worked with Scott, Miguel, Romeo, and Nou on a public art project called “Los Muchachos.”  He helped develop large photo collages that are being transformed into sculptures, slated for installation on Broad Street in June, 2014.
We’re so glad he left us with a big, beautiful reminder: Dougie was here.
