The AS220 Youth Live Arts program offers a variety of weekly classes in performance, music, dance and digital production. Students are encouraged to record personal projects, perform at AS220 Youth showcases and coordinate their own music related events. At AS220 Youth, students can produce, record, perform and sell their music all under one roof. We are a one-stop shop for aspiring musicians and entrepreneurs! For students who are invested in taking their music to a professional level, they can audition for the ZuKrewe: AS220’s youth led performance troupe. Members of the Zukrewe work collaboratively to create theme based albums and perform all over New England. As a Krewe, they have opened up for national acts including Bone Thugs in Harmony, Lost Boys, Slick Rick, Mobb Deep and many others. The AS220 Youth Live Arts program has a major focus on Hip Hop. Over 99% of the students who attend AS220 Youth say that they identify with Hip Hop culture including the elements, dress, language, values, history and of course, the music. Through Hip Hop, we explore various musical genres, histories and social justice themes. Popular classes include Audio Production ,MC Writing, Digital Production, Live Band, Hip Hop Dance, Video and  Zukrewe.

ZuKrewe is a performance troupe dedicated to spreading knowledge through the art of rhyme. We perform all over New England and work to drop at least one full original album a year. Any young person who can make the commitment to our team can join the ZuKrewe.

The classes we offer…

MC Writing  focuses on teaching MC’s how to express themselves through the art of rhyme. Each term we review and build on song writing basics, create songs, and record them in our Delgado Recording Studio. We study all the MC’s, poets, and Hip Hop writers who came before us.

Hip Hop Dance  focuses on teaching students basic hip hop movement, learning short routines, and increasing flexibility. Students are also given the opportunity to create their own choreography and teach it to the class. As the term concludes, we take all of our routines  and put them together to make a 5 minute long performance set.

2Legit is AS220 Youth’s hip hop dance troupe. The goal of 2Legit is to help youth become better choreographers, perform on as many stages as possible, and learn how to teach hip hop dance to others. Any students who can make the commitment to coming to practice can join 2Legit, and everyone is given the opportunity to choreograph for the group.

Studio Engineering is all about learning how to work independently in the recording studio. Engineers learn how to properly set up a recording studio, book and manage recording sessions and most importantly how use Pro-tools LE. Students who successfully complete the Studio Engineering course, will be cleared to help manage and record sessions here at the Delgado Studio.

Beatmaking  gives students the skills they need to produce their own original instrumentals.  Students learn everything from how to lay down simple drum patterns to chopping up samples, tracking out beats, and getting your finished product into the hands of emcees worldwide.

Guitar and Vocals– private lessons are so pricey but not at AS220 Youth. Any member of the studio can receive guitar and vocal lessons for FREE! The Guitar class helps students learn the basics needed to play the guitar.  We cover guitar maintenance, chord techniques, scales and some basic music theory . Vocals is  a workshop for any student who wants to strengthen their voice. Basic singing exercises, breathing techniques, proper diction, and pronunciation are just a few skills students will work on during class time. Students also learn how to compose and perform their own songs.

A couple of weeks before the actual shoot, we planned to shoot the video in a graveyard, an alley way and if we got lucky, a church. We were unsure if a church would be understanding of the type of music we make and our overall vision for the song. The song is basically a trapped out version of a prayer. The concept is all about asking for God’s protection, love and forgiveness. Unfortunately we were unable to use the original church that we aimed to get so we decided to shoot outside of the huge church downtown. Mid-shoot, however, a older gentlemen walked up to us and offered for us to use the chapel that he belongs to.he said he just needed to run inside and ask the pastor if he’d be down to let us borrow his space. Excited about the possibility, we carried on shooting M.L.O’s part outside of the gigantic church. A few minutes later 4 pastors came outside and asked us about our music and how they could assist us. We told them about our vision , exchanged a few personal and varying views on God and was shortly after let into the chapel in exchange for 5 minutes of the Word. Thanks to Harbor Grace, we were able to get some amazing shots inside the chapel that really brought this video to life. Things like the beautifully stained glass, the altar and the pews helped transform this video into something really special. We ventured into our day thinking we would be shooting a regular music but ended up leaving the day with some new friends and some new ideas about spirituality. I think overall everyone felt inspired and grateful for the experience. Big-Ups to Mike Russo and the whole As220 Youth video team for making this happen! zukrewe-summer-soultokeep   SOUL TO KEEP PROMO New Single “Soul to Keep” by ZuKrewe! First Trap Gospel track ever! Every Monday, 2Legit, ZuKrewe’s official dance team and Project 401 would meet up, listen to music made by local Hip Hop artist, and then get to creating choreography.
